Record Broken! Most Expensive Watch to Sell at Auction
On November 9, 2019 at Christie’s Only Watch auction, the record for the most expensive watch ever sold at auction was broken by the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime reference 6300A. How much? CHF 31 million!
The previous record for the most expensive watch sold was held by the Henry Graves Jr. Supercomplication that sold for $24 million by Sotheby in 2014. The new record holder overtook this watch as well as the most expensive wrist watch ever sold which was Paul Newman’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona which sold in 2017 for $17.75 million.
The watch is a unique stainless steel watch that measures 48mm in diameter and 16mm in height. With 20 complications, it includes a reversible case with a salmon dial on one side and an ebony dial on the other. Running off the manual wind caliber 300, it includes complications like a second time zone, day/night indicator, day/date on both sides, month indicator, leap year, 4 digit year display, 24 hour and minute sub-dials and no less than 4 chiming mechanisms, of which two are world firsts. One is a chiming mechanism at a pre-selected time and the other a date repeater.
Enjoy!
