Andy Warhol's Patek Philippe ref. 570 Up For Auction
Provenance has been a feature of vintage watches that has been growing in importance to collectors. It is important to collectors to know where their watches come from. Well, Christie’s is offering a watch with just that. The watch in question is a Patek Philippe ref. 570, signed by retailer Hausmann that belonged to famous artist, director and producer Andy Warhol.
On face value, the watch is a fairly simple Patek Philippe ref. 570 from 1954, sold in 1955. It’s 35mm 18k gold case is in great condition, with some oxidisation on the dial which gives the watch a different warmth to it. Looking closer, you will notice the watch is signed by famous retailer Hausmann, which makes the 570 a bit rarer and more interesting to collectors. Double signed dials have increased in popularity and often command a premium. And then there is the provenance we mentioned previously. This is the second time this watch has hit the auction block. It was part of Sotheby’s 1988 auction called ‘The Andy Warhol Collection'.
Interestingly, the watch will be part of Christie’s online auction called Watches Online: The New York Edition. Normally, when watches of this type of provenance come to auction, many auction houses prefer an in-person format to build up some interest and suspense in the special occasion. The watch is estimated to go between USD 45,000-95,000. We will have to see how it does!
The watch can be found here.
Enjoy!
