First Watch Purchase - Omega or Rolex?

First time watch buyers often stumble upon a very common question - should one buy a Rolex or an Omega as their first watch? The debate often entails a group of watches; the DateJust, Submariner, Speedmaster and Seamaster. What are the questions one should be asking and which brand should they choose?

Something that often is skipped over is whether or not one should go for a vintage or modern watch? Without getting too deep into that philosophical question, there certainly is an argument to be made for each. If one is looking to purchase a modern watch, Rolex is a great place to go. While Omega has a ton of incredible things that come with owning a model from the manufacture, Rolex does stand a bit higher. They have very classical sports-styled watches that hold their value extremely well. So it allows the wearer to feel what it is like to wear a Rolex, and then possibly trade it in (for close to what it was purchased for) for something they may like better. There is also a huge collector and enthusiast community that Rolex can help get one get involved in. This opens us doors and knowledge for the newer collector to start their journey of learning about watches.

But what about vintage? Should this change your mind? Omega really is a wonderful place to start for a first time buyer. There is so much variety in the types of watches Omega produced throughout their history. There is bound to be something that speaks to a first time collector. Whether it is a vintage, dressier Omega Seamaster or the ever-famous Speedmaster. If price is a concern, there are some extremely affordable watches from Omega that compete easily with vintage Rolex. Also, the manufacture has documented a huge amount of its history which helps a first time buyer, research and learn about their potential first buy. There also is a great vintage Omega community that, like the Rolex community, helps one learn and meet other watch enthusiasts. Whatever one is looking for in their first watch purchase, these are two great brands to be considering.

Enjoy!
