Are Quartz Movements Worth It?
There is stigma that is attached to watch collecting that one must spend a lot of money to have a watch that everyone would deem appropriate for the hobby. For this reason, watches with quartz movements, which are often inexpensive, are disregarded by some collectors.
To us, we don’t think this is the right mentality to have. Watch collecting is about experience all types of watches, especially those that you like. If you like quartz watches, you should buy them and enjoy them! There are a few reasons why quartz watches are absolutely worth owning.
The first reason has to do with the accuracy of quartz movements. The quartz movement is way more accurate than mechanical watches. There are some people who find accuracy to be the most important part of the watches they own. Furthermore, there are some people who use their watches for their profession which relies on the accuracy of the individual. Having a quartz watch means accuracy - so it will be useful for them!
There are also many important brands that use quartz movements in their watches. We are not saying you need to own watches only from important brands, but there are some icon brands that were birthed out of quartz movements. Some brands also utilize them in some very cool watches. Seiko, for example, has some incredible quartz watches. But brands like Vacheron Constantin also have used quartz movements in their watches - the Overseas for example.
Next, quartz watches are a part of watchmaking history. The quartz crisis was integral to the history of watches. It really tested mechanical watchmakers. It also tested large manufactures and made them think and produce watches that could compete with the growing interest in mechanical watches.
The last reason really falls on the fact that there are some very cool and very liked quartz watches out there. These watches have captured our attention, not just from the brands history but also from the aesthetics of the watch. For example, this limited edition Seiko for the 2002 world cup - it is simply a cool watch! But there are other watches, like a G-Shock, that people still love to wear. We are sure a quartz watch has caught you eye - go and try it on. You will most likely not regret it.
