Watches that will be Future Classics - Glashütte Original, Zenith, Grand Seiko

When we think of classic watches, our minds immediately shoot to the Rolex Submariner or Omega Speedmaster. They were the epitome of ingenuity in their time and have gained cult followings today. So what will be a classic from our era that people will look to collect in 30 or 40 years?

Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar

The PanoMaticLunar is a perfect example of a watch that looks and feels that part of a future classic. It has very similar stylistic elements of the Lange 1, with similar dial proportions and dial window. It also features a beautiful moon phase at 2 o’clock with the time and sub seconds towards the left side of the dial. This watch will be a future classic because of its deeply capturing style elements but also because it is from a brand that has really grown and flexed its watchmaking muscles over the past 10 years.

Zenith Defy Lab

The Zenith Defy Lab is a future classic in the making. Zenith created a completely new type of watch movement. They created the Zenith Oscillator that gets rid of 30 key components including the conventional balance, balance spring and ruby pallets. It has a very familiar and desirable sporty case shape as well. Because of its skeleton you can also see the vibrating movement that Zenith has created and for that reason will be a future classic.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive Caliber 9R65

Grand Seiko, the higher end watchmaking of well known brand Seiko was one of the first companies to combine the accuracy of an electronic regulator with traditional watchmaking. The Spring Drive allows for a watch to be extremely accurate because of the electronic regulator compared to mechanical watches. In 2004, they released their first Spring Drive movement, the 9R65, which had a power reserve indicator at 8 and date at 3 0’clock. Like the Defy Lab, it is an example of ingenuity in watchmaking, and therefore is destined for ‘future classic’ status.
